What Is UTRIP and Who Can Apply?

UTRIP is a fully funded summer research program at the University of Tokyo for students studying natural sciences. It’s designed for international undergraduates who want hands-on research experience under top professors in Japan.

To qualify for UTRIP 2026, you must:

  • Have completed at least one full year of your Bachelor’s degree.
  • Still be a Bachelor’s student after finishing UTRIP (you must return to your university).
  • Be studying a natural science or a closely related field.
  • Be interested in a long-term career in science.
  • Be ready to commit full-time for six consecutive weeks.
  • Have health insurance that covers your stay in Japan.

  • Recommendation letter deadline: January 14, 2026 (17:00 JST)

Late submissions are not accepted. Everything must be submitted through the official online system.

When Will Results Be Announced?

  • Selection results will be posted on the UTRIP website in early April 2026.
  • Selected students will also receive emails between mid–late March.

How to Apply for UTRIP 2026

You have to submit all documents online. There is no save button, so prepare everything in advance.

Before applying, you should:

  • Review the list of hosting labs and project topics.
  • Select up to two labs in order of preference.
  • Check “Past UTRIP” reports to understand what previous students achieved.

Documents You Need for the Application

1. Personal Information

Provide a reliable email address and a mailing address where you can receive documents between March and June 2026.

2. Personal Statement (700–1000 words)

Recommendation Letter

You need one professor to write a recommendation.

Steps:

  4. They must upload the recommendation by January 14, 2026.
