Applications for the 2026 MIT Summer Research Internship Program are now open for all international students. The MSRP is a competitive nine-week summer research experience held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It was launched in 1986 to broaden participation in research, especially for undergraduates whose educational experiences may not have followed traditional pathways.

The mission: to promote the value of graduate education, to broaden perspectives and participation in research and innovation, and to prepare and recruit exceptional undergraduate students for graduate study at MIT and beyond.

Program Features

Duration: For the 2026 cohort, the dates are June 8 – August 8, 2026.
Seminars and talks: Weekly presentations by MIT faculty across disciplines.
Professional development: Workshops on academic growth, research skills, and graduate school preparation.
Service and community engagement: A dedicated service day and social events (barbecues, a Boston Harbour cruise, local attractions).
Scholarly output: Interns prepare an abstract and research paper, and give a poster presentation at the end of the summer.
Broad disciplinary participation: Many MIT departments host students under the program (Aeronautics & Astronautics, Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & EE, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, etc.).

Eligibility Requirements for the MIT Summer Research Internship

Applicants must meet the following general criteria:

Minimum GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in overall or major.
Be enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program at a U.S. college or university (located in the U.S. or its territories), excluding MIT.
Be a sophomore, junior, or non-graduating senior with at least two academic years of college coursework completed (excluding high-school credits). Students must not graduate before December 2026.
Have an interest in pursuing a graduate degree in one of MIT’s graduate programs (excluding Sloan professional programs like MBA, EMBA, LGO).
Demonstrate a genuine interest in pursuing a career in academic research and/or teaching.
Applicants may be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, non-U.S. citizens with DACA, or international students with the appropriate visa/work authorization, but they must be enrolled full-time at a U.S. institution.

Also strongly encouraged to apply are students from underrepresented backgrounds or those who have overcome educational, economic, or social barriers.

Important note: The “General” MSRP track does not accept applications for specific MIT departments (specifically Biology and Brain & Cognitive Sciences) because they run their own variant of the program.

Required Documents for MIT Summer Research Internship

Two letters of recommendation are required. At least one should be from a faculty member where you have taken classes or done research; if you have prior research experience, one should come from your research supervisor.

Essay/Personal statement components: personal statement, research interests and goals, how MSRP aligns with your academic & professional aspirations.

Document uploads: Resume or CV. Unofficial transcript(s) from all institutions attended.

Research preference section: You’ll list the top three research preferences (department, faculty member, research area).

Additional items: Interns are expected to be on campus full-time for the duration of the program; no outside coursework is permitted.

How to Apply for the MIT Summer Research Program

Application opens September 26, 2025.
Application deadline: January 20, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET.
Applicants must apply through the online portal on the MSRP site.
The application process includes entering recommender information (so the system sends them the request for letters) and uploading the required documents.
Decision notifications are sent by March 31.
