The UNESCO Intercultural Leadership Programme provides leadership training, mentorship, international networking opportunities, and USD 10,000 in seed funding for selected participants to implement community-based projects.

What is the UNESCO Intercultural Leadership Programme?

The UNESCO Intercultural Leadership Programme is UNESCO’s flagship global initiative for emerging leaders committed to promoting intercultural dialogue and peaceful societies. The programme recognizes that cultural diversity and dialogue play an important role in solving social challenges and strengthening communities.

Participants will learn how to lead across cultures, strengthen communication skills, manage conflict through dialogue, and design projects that create measurable social impact. 2026 Theme

The 2026 programme theme is:

Human Connection and Dialogue in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Participants will examine how Artificial Intelligence affects intercultural relationships while developing solutions that encourage inclusion, responsible technology use, cultural diversity, multilingual communication, accessibility, and peacebuilding. They will also explore issues such as misinformation, hate speech, online polarization, algorithmic bias, and digital inequality.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be between 25 and 45 years old as of 22 October 2026
  • Demonstrate leadership experience in their professional or community work
  • Show commitment to intercultural dialogue and positive social impact
  • Be willing to collaborate with participants from different cultural backgrounds
  • Be available to complete all programme activities
  • Submit all application materials in English.

Programme Structure

The UNESCO Intercultural Leadership Programme consists of three phases.

Phase 1: Leadership Development

Participants complete a structured online learning programme covering:

  • Intercultural leadership
  • Strategic communication
  • Conflict transformation
  • Adaptive leadership
  • Technology and AI for dialogue
  • Designing community initiatives
  • Ethical use of AI in leadership.

Phase 2: Community Action Project

Participants prepare an action plan based on the programme theme. Once approved, UNESCO provides USD 10,000 in seed funding to implement the project over six months. Throughout implementation, participants continue receiving mentorship and technical support.

Phase 3: Global Engagement

Participants present their project outcomes during the UNESCO Global Youth Dialogue for Peace and become members of the international Youth for Peace Alumni Network. They also gain opportunities to contribute to UNESCO’s policy discussions and intercultural leadership initiatives.

Selection Process

The selection process includes four stages:

  1. Submit the online application before the deadline.
  2. UNESCO reviews eligibility requirements.
  3. An international jury evaluates eligible applications.
  4. Fifty Young Leaders will be selected and notified by mid-October 2026.
