SEDarc PhD Studentships 2027-28 in the UK are offering funded doctoral opportunities for UK and international students across six universities in South East England. The studentships are funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) through the South East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDarc). Applicants can pursue doctoral research in a range of social science disciplines, with funding that includes tuition fees and a stipend.
The SEDarc Studentship Competition supports postgraduate researchers through doctoral research, specialist training and a funded placement. The programme covers 14 social science disciplines organised around five interdisciplinary research themes. SEDarc PhD Funding Benefits
SEDarc studentships provide funding for doctoral research and professional development. The award includes tuition fees and a stipend at the UK home fee rate. For successful overseas applicants, SEDarc states that participating institutions cover the difference between UK home and international tuition fees, with the exception of the University of Reading. Applicants should therefore check the fee arrangements directly with their selected university.
The studentship also provides:
- UK tuition fee funding
- Maintenance stipend at the applicable UKRI rate
- Research skills training
- General and specialist skills development
- A funded three-month Research in Practice placement
- Additional support for research and fieldwork
- Possible funding for overseas institutional visits
- Difficult Language Training support where appropriate
SEDarc currently publishes up to 39 ESRC-funded studentships each year, although the number available for the 2027 cohort is subject to confirmation following the ESRC DTP mid-term review.

Who Can Apply?
The SEDarc PhD Studentships 2027 are open to UK and international applicants.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Apply through one of the six SEDarc universities.
- Receive a nomination from the selected SEDarc university.
- Propose a research project that fits the relevant SEDarc research themes.
- Meet the academic and doctoral admission requirements of the selected university.
- Applicants who have already started a PhD are not eligible.
- Studentships cannot be deferred.
- Part-time study is available only to applicants with UK home fee status because of visa restrictions.
International applicants should check the funding arrangements of their chosen university before applying.
How to Apply for SEDarc PhD Studentships
- Select one of the six SEDarc participating universities.
- Choose a suitable research area and SEDarc thematic pathway.
- Identify potential supervisors at your selected university.
- Contact the university’s professional service or doctoral admissions team for the institutional application process.
- Submit your application to the selected university before its institutional deadline.
- Wait for the university to assess your application and nominate candidates for the SEDarc competition.
- If nominated, complete the SEDarc studentship application.
- Submit the final SEDarc application by 29 January 2027 at 4:00 PM GMT.
Applicants should note that university deadlines are earlier than the central SEDarc deadline. Kingston University, for example, has set 7 December 2026 as its initial deadline, while the University of Reading requires applications by 11 December 2026.
Applications are assessed on three main criteria:
- Fit to SEDarc themes: 20%
- Project quality and feasibility: 40%
- Student quality: 40%
Applicants should therefore develop a clear research proposal, demonstrate preparation for doctoral research and explain how the proposed project fits the selected SEDarc theme.
