Martingale Scholarship Eligibility

The scholarship has specific eligibility requirements. It is not open to all international students. Applicants must qualify for Home Fee status at a Martingale partner university and must meet the foundation’s education and socioeconomic criteria.

For the 2027 intake, applicants must generally:

  • Have achieved or be on track for a First or Upper-Second Class degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject
  • Be eligible to start a Masters or PhD at a UK university in September 2027
  • Qualify for Home Fee status
  • Have attended school in the UK or Ireland for the required period
  • Have completed GCSEs or an equivalent qualification at a state-funded school, or received a scholarship covering at least 90% of fees at a fee-paying school
  • Have faced financial barriers, including a household income of £45,000 or under

Applicants with refugee status who qualify for Home Fee status may be exempt from the UK or Ireland school attendance requirement.

How to Apply for the Martingale Scholarship

The application process has three main stages.

  • First, apply to Martingale. Applicants submit an online application with academic information, evidence of financial need and two referees.
  • Second, apply to partner universities. Successful applicants become Martingale Qualified Candidates and receive support while applying for eligible Masters or PhD courses.
  • Third, funding is allocated. For Masters applicants, Martingale considers university offers and course preferences when allocating funded places. For PhD applicants, universities make offers from the pool of qualified candidates.

Becoming a Qualified Candidate does not automatically guarantee a scholarship because the number of qualified candidates is larger than the number of available funded places.

Martingale Scholarship Deadline

The Martingale Scholarship 2027 deadline is 18 October 2026. Shortlisted applicants are expected to be interviewed in November 2026, followed by university application support from December 2026 to January 2027. University applications are expected to take place in January and February 2027, with funded places offered in April 2027.

Students should check the official eligibility rules and eligible course list before starting an application, as university programmes can have their own admission requirements and earlier deadlines.
