The IMPRS-HD PhD Program 2027 in Germany invites applications from international students interested in doctoral research in astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmic physics. Who Can Apply?
- Applicants from all countries are eligible to apply.
- Candidates should normally have an MSc in Physics or an equivalent degree with a substantial master’s thesis.
- Applicants must have a sufficiently broad and deep physics background at undergraduate level.
- A very good final grade, comparable to 2.0 or better in the German grading system, is expected.
- Students who have not completed their MSc by the application deadline can apply, provided they complete the degree before starting the PhD.
- Exceptionally qualified applicants with a four-year BSc in Physics may be considered through the 4+4 PhD program.
- Applicants without a full MSc thesis may exceptionally be considered if they can demonstrate independent research ability, such as through first-author peer-reviewed publications.
- An English language test is not required by IMPRS-HD.

Required Documents
A complete IMPRS-HD application should include:
- Completed online application form
- Academic certificates
- BSc and MSc transcripts, where applicable
- List of courses, credits and grades
- Translations of documents not issued in English or German
- MSc or BSc thesis, if available
- Published research papers, if available
- Two letters of recommendation
Each application PDF must be no larger than 10 MB. Recommendation letters must be submitted by the referees before the same application deadline.
Selection Process
- The IMPRS Admissions Committee reviews applications based on academic qualifications, research experience and recommendation letters.
- Shortlisted applications are shared with potential PhD supervisors.
- Candidates who attract supervisor interest may be invited for an interview in Heidelberg or online.
- Heidelberg interviews for the 2027 intake are scheduled for February 1-5, 2027.
- First PhD offers are expected shortly after the interview week.
- Interviews may continue until all available positions are filled.
