Eligibility Requirements for the Hesse Fund for Refugees

To qualify, applicants must generally meet the following:

  • Refugee Status
    • Recognized refugee status, asylum seeker eligible for asylum, or temporary protection in Germany.
  • Academic Placement
    • Must be enrolled (or in the admission process) at a state university in Hessen

OR

  • Accepted for PhD studies

OR

  • Hold/receive a research or teaching position at a Hessen university.
  • Academic Performance
    • Must demonstrate a strong academic record or research achievements.
  • Residency Requirement
    • Should not have been registered in Germany for more than 4-5 years since asylum application

  4. Enrollment Certificate or Admission Letter from a Hessen university

How to Apply for the Hessen Fund Scholarship

  1. Choose a state university in Hessen (e.g., Frankfurt, Marburg, Kassel, Darmstadt, Gießen, etc.).
  2. Contact the International Office or Refugee Student Coordinator.
  3. Ask for their HessenFonds nomination procedure.
  4. Prepare and submit your documents to the university.
  5. If selected, the university will nominate you to the ministry.
  6. Final selection is made by the Hessian Ministry.

Important: You do NOT apply directly to the government. You must apply through the International Office or Refugee Support Office of your university in Hessen.
