The African Climate and Environment Centre – Future African Savannas (AFAS) is inviting applications for its fully funded 2026–28 Master’s program, designed for emerging leaders in Nature-Based Solutions, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity conservation. Hosted by the University of Nairobi (Kenya) and Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny (Côte d’Ivoire), the fellowship offers hands-on research opportunities, cross-continental collaboration, and engagement with policymakers, NGOs, and communities to address Africa’s pressing environmental challenges.

This program is ideal for graduates and young professionals who are eager to bridge science, policy, and practice and make a measurable impact on sustainable development in African savannas.

Why AFAS Masters Fellowship Matters

AFAS is part of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Global Centers for Climate and Environment. Fellows can only choose one host university and must commit to full-time, on-campus study.

What the Fellowship Covers

The AFAS Master’s Fellowship is fully funded and includes:

  • Full tuition fees at the host university
  • Monthly stipend in local currency
  • Health insurance and a laptop
  • Research budget for thesis projects
  • Access to summer schools, workshops, and hybrid courses

Continued funding depends on academic progress and active engagement in program activities.

Who Should Apply

AFAS seeks applicants who are independent thinkers, highly motivated, and ready to reflect on real-world environmental issues. Ideal candidates:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, agriculture, biology, ecology, climate sciences, economics, or sociology
  • Are under 26 years old by 2 October 2026
  • Can commit to full-time residency on campus
  • Are interested in applying research to practical climate adaptation and biodiversity solutions

Applicants must also demonstrate English proficiency for UoN or French/English as required for UFHB.

Research Focus Areas

Fellows will develop a master’s thesis within one of five thematic areas:

  1. Water – sustainable management, irrigation, and ecosystem resilience
  2. Agriculture – climate-smart farming, soil restoration, and sustainable livelihoods
  3. Energy – renewable energy solutions and low-carbon technologies
  4. One Health – integrated human, animal, and environmental health
  5. Biodiversity – ecosystem restoration, species conservation, and habitat management

Applicants must indicate their primary focus and briefly explain their research idea. A secondary thematic interest can also be listed.
