Eligibility Criteria of the Stanford Science Fellowship 2027
The Stanford Science Fellowship is intended for exceptional early-career scientists conducting fundamental research in the natural sciences. Research proposals primarily focused on social sciences are not eligible. Engineering applicants may be eligible when their proposed work uses engineering tools to address fundamental questions in the natural sciences.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Have received their PhD within three years of the fellowship start date.
- Have no more than two years of previous postdoctoral experience at another institution.
- Demonstrate a strong record of scientific achievement.
- Propose research that advances fundamental scientific understanding.
- Be prepared to work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries.
- Identify a potential Stanford faculty host.
For the 2027 fellowship, applicants who received their PhD before July 1, 2024 are not eligible. Applicants whose postdoctoral experience began before July 1, 2025 may also be ineligible if they have had uninterrupted postdoctoral experience since completing their PhD.
International researchers are eligible to apply. International scholars generally need to qualify for a J-1 visa, although an F-1 extension may be appropriate in some cases. International scholars holding an H-1B employment visa are not eligible for the fellowship.
Current Stanford graduate students and postdocs are not eligible. Applicants also cannot begin a Stanford appointment before March 1, 2027, during the selection period.

Research Areas
Applicants select a primary research area when submitting their application. The available areas include:

The research statement should explain the research problem, what could be achieved over a three- to five-year period, and how Stanford could support the proposed research.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact potential Stanford faculty hosts before applying. A fellowship cannot be awarded until at least one faculty member has agreed to host the applicant.
