The FRIAS Sustainable Governance Senior Fellowship Programme 2027/28 is now accepting applications from experienced researchers based at institutions in Africa. Offered by the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg, this fully funded fellowship supports outstanding research in the humanities and social sciences with a focus on sustainable governance.
The Germany fellowship is designed to strengthen academic collaboration between Africa and Germany while promoting high-quality interdisciplinary research. Selected fellows will spend six months at the University of Freiburg, where they will conduct independent research and collaborate with leading academics. During the fellowship period, researchers will have full access to university facilities, office space, academic events, and an international research network.
Depending on their employment status, fellows will receive either a salary through the University of Freiburg or an alternative financial arrangement. In addition, the programme covers research expenses and travel costs for the journey to and from Germany. Fellows also receive support with accommodation, visa applications, and childcare arrangements.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the FRIAS Sustainable Governance Senior Fellowship, applicants must:
- Hold a completed PhD degree
- Have at least eight years of postdoctoral research experience
- Be based at an academic or research institution in an African country
- Hold a Master’s degree or PhD obtained in an African country
- Have completed at least six months of research or study at an academic institution outside the country where they earned their first academic degree
- Have at least five peer-reviewed publications published since 1 January 2017, including at least one publication authored or co-authored by the applicant
- Submit a research proposal in the humanities or social sciences focusing on sustainable governance
- Obtain a Letter of Cooperation from a professor at the University of Freiburg

Selection Process
