The University of Chicago Journalists in Residence Program 2027 is inviting journalists from around the world to apply for a 12-week professional development opportunity at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in the United States. The program is designed for journalists who want to deepen their knowledge of political economy, business, finance, and the relationship between politics and the economy.

The Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program provides selected participants with access to Chicago Booth classes, seminars, workshops, faculty members, and other journalists. Participants will spend approximately 12 weeks at the university’s Hyde Park campus in Chicago, where they can audit classes and take part in the academic activities of the Stigler Center.

The Spring 2027 program will run tentatively from March 15 to May 31, 2027. The application deadline is September 20, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Chicago time.

About the University of Chicago Journalists in Residence Program 2027

The Stigler Center launched the Journalists in Residence Program in 2017 to help develop the next generation of leaders in business reporting. The program is open to journalists working in different forms of media and brings professionals from different countries together at Chicago Booth.

Participants audit three classes, attend Stigler Center seminars and events, work with university scholars and connect with journalists from other media organizations. The program also provides an opportunity to write for ProMarket, although writing for the publication is not mandatory.

Who Can Apply?

The Journalists in Residence Program is intended for working journalists with professional experience and an interest in political economy.

Applicants should have:

• At least some years of journalism or media experience
• Strong English language skills
• An interest in political economy, business, economics, finance, or related subjects
• Published journalism work that can demonstrate their reporting experience

Freelance journalists and editors are also eligible to apply. The Stigler Center says strong applicants generally have at least a few years of post-degree professional experience. Recent graduates whose main experience consists of internships may not meet the typical profile of a competitive applicant.

There is no requirement to be a newspaper journalist. The program welcomes journalists working across different forms of media.

English Language Requirement

Non-native English speakers must provide proof of English proficiency unless they completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at a university where English was the primary language of instruction.

What Do Participants Study?

Participants audit three Chicago Booth classes during the program. They can select classes based on their interests, subject to instructor permission, available seats, and any course prerequisites.

The program also requires participants to attend Stigler Center seminars, lectures, conferences, workshops, social events, and other activities. Participants are expected to complete assigned readings and coursework associated with their audited classes.

Basic knowledge of economics and accounting can be useful, but the Stigler Center states that it is not required before joining the program.
