Applications are now open for the NIAS Fellowship 2026-2027 in the Netherlands. The fellowship is offered by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in partnership with the Dutch Foundation for Literature (Letterenfonds). This opportunity is designed for established literary writers from the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom who want to develop a literary project within an international academic environment.
The fellowship will run from February to July 2027 at NIAS in Amsterdam. During the five-month residency, the selected fellow will work alongside researchers and scholars from different disciplines while developing their literary project. The programme provides financial support, research facilities, subsidised accommodation, and access to NIAS’s academic community.
Unlike traditional writing residencies, the NIAS Fellowship places writers in a multidisciplinary research institute where they are expected to participate in seminars, workshops, and other academic activities. English is the working language at NIAS, enabling fellows to engage with scholars from around the world.

NIAS Fellowship Benefits
The selected fellow will receive:

Eligibility Criteria NIAS Writers Fellowship
Applicants must:
- Be based in Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, or Sint Maarten
- Be an established literary fiction or non-fiction writer
- Write in Papiamentu, Papiamento, Dutch, or English as spoken on the Caribbean islands
- Have a strong record of published literary work
- Submit a literary project that will benefit from the multidisciplinary research environment at NIAS
- Demonstrate good English language skills
- Be comfortable working in an international academic setting
The proposed project should already be well developed before the fellowship begins and should not be in its initial idea stage.

Selection Process
Applications will first be reviewed by the Dutch Foundation for Literature to confirm eligibility. Eligible applications will then be evaluated by an independent selection committee based on:
- Literary quality of the applicant’s published work
- Quality and feasibility of the proposed project
- Relevance of the project to the academic environment at NIAS
Following the evaluation, the committee will recommend candidates to NIAS. NIAS will make the final selection after consultation with its Academic Advisory Board.
