  2. Clear interest in research postgraduate studies
You must show serious intent toward research, especially MPhil or PhD pathways. This should be obvious in your personal statement.
  3. Previous research experience
Research projects, lab work, thesis, publications, conference work, or strong research-oriented coursework all count.
  4. Interest in interdisciplinary studies
Applicants who can connect their field with other disciplines are viewed favorably, especially in emerging or cross-faculty research areas.
  5. High English proficiency
Since research, presentations, and mentoring are conducted in English, strong academic English is essential.
  6. Maturity and independence
HKU looks for students who can work independently, manage a research project, and engage professionally with faculty.

In simple terms, they want students who are academically strong, research-driven, self-motivated, and PhD-ready.

Each participant is placed within a faculty or interdisciplinary research unit and supervised by a professor.
