What is the Flemish Government Scholarship?

The Flemish Government Scholarship is a financial aid program designed to support students studying in Flanders, including those at VUB. Students who qualify receive financial support and also pay reduced tuition fees, making higher education more accessible.

Even if you don’t qualify for the full scholarship, you might still benefit from reduced tuition fees.

Application Procedure

Applications for the 2025–2026 academic year are open from June 2, 2025, to June 1, 2026. The process is fully digital via the Department of Study Grants portal (Studietoelagen – Afdeling Toelagen en Erkenningen).

How to Apply:

  1. Create an online profile on studietoelagen.be.
  2. Complete the online form, answering questions about your family and financial situation.
  3. Upload supporting documents such as:
    • Student accommodation rental contract
    • Proof of family income
  4. The Department of Study Grants evaluates your eligibility and calculates the grant amount.

Login Requirements:

  • Belgian e-ID with PIN (or a new one via ibz.be)
  • Compatible card reader (can be borrowed from campus Social Services)
  • Alternatively, the “Itsme” app can be used

Support:

  • Assistance is available at your campus Social Services office or local Flemish Community office.
  • The website is in Dutch, but after logging in, you can switch to English.

Eligibility Criteria of the Flemish Government Scholarship

To qualify, you must meet three conditions simultaneously: nationality, study, and financial conditions. Age is not a factor.

1. Nationality Conditions

You are eligible if you meet one of the following on December 31, 2025:

  • Belgian national
  • EU or EEA national
  • Non-EEA national with permanent residence in Belgium for 12 months (not for study/work purposes)
  • Recognized refugee or beneficiary of subsidiary protection
  • Victim of human trafficking with official attestation
  • Family reunification with someone who meets the above conditions
  • Students from Ukraine with temporary protection status

Temporary students in Belgium solely for study purposes are not eligible.

2. Study Conditions

You must be enrolled in an officially recognized program with at least 27 credits. Exceptions exist during your degree year.

Eligible programs include:

  • 2 Graduate programs
  • 2 Bachelor’s programs
  • 1 Initial Master’s program
  • 1 Bridging program
  • 1 Preparatory program
  • 1 Extra educational degree

Restrictions:

  • Maximum study grants depend on your previous degrees.
  • Credits registered with a credit or exam contract are not eligible.
  • Combining a basic program with further training (Advanced Master’s, PhD) may affect the grant.

3. Financial Conditions

Your family income must be below a specific limit, generally based on the income two years prior (2023 for the 2025–2026 academic year). Adjustments are made for:

  • Recent income decreases
  • Divorce or the death of a parent
  • Students who are financially independent or married

Amount of the Study Grant

The grant is a one-year payment. Amounts vary based on:

  • Family income
  • Student accommodation (rent)
  • Number of registered credits
  • Study history

For 2025–2026:

  • Minimum: €332.24
  • Maximum for renting students: €5,141.52 (8 months or more)
  • Maximum for students living with parents: €3,085.91

Advance Payment:
You can request an interest-free advance to cover early tuition or study expenses, available at your campus Social Services office.

Reduced Tuition Fee

Students receiving a study grant pay a reduced tuition fee of €136.50.

Partial reductions may apply if:

  • You meet financial conditions, but not study conditions
  • Family income exceeds the limit slightly
  • Ownership of a second property affects eligibility

Reduced tuition fee requests must be submitted via your campus Social Services office.
