American University Scholarship 2027 Benefits
The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship provides substantial financial support for undergraduate study. The full scholarship covers all billable American University expenses, including tuition, room, and board.
The scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study if the recipient maintains satisfactory academic performance. Students can apply regardless of their intended major because all majors offered at American University are eligible.
American University has also introduced AU EGL Partial Scholarships worth up to US$40,000 per year. Students do not need to submit a separate application for these partial awards. Candidates who successfully complete the AU EGLS process may be considered for partial scholarship funding.
The full scholarship does not cover every study-related expense. Students should plan for costs such as:

Who Can Apply for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship?
The scholarship is intended for international students applying for undergraduate admission at American University.
Applicants are not eligible if they:
- Are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, including pending permanent residents
- Hold dual U.S. citizenship
- Have already started post-secondary studies at another university in their home country or the United States
- Graduated from secondary school before 2024
Preference is given to students who have overcome significant challenges and come from diverse or underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds. American University also looks for demonstrated leadership, volunteerism, community service, and a commitment to advancing the needs of people in the applicant’s home country. Students still in secondary school who will graduate by June 2027 are also preferred.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must meet American University’s English proficiency requirements. Accepted tests include TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, PTE, LanguageCERT Academic, and Cambridge English.
For general international first-year admission, the university currently lists minimum scores including TOEFL 85, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120, PTE 60, and LanguageCERT Academic 70. Official test results must be sent directly to American University.
How to Apply for the AU EGLS 2027
The application process has two required steps:
- Submit the Common Application and all required supporting documents.
- Complete the AU EGLS application and essays through the applicant portal.
Complete both steps by January 15, 2027. Applicants must complete the first step before submitting the scholarship application. Late applications will not be considered.
Applicants must also submit a bank letter and the signed AU Declaration of Finances Form, confirming a minimum of US$4,000, along with official English proficiency test results. Scholarship semifinalists and finalists may be asked to complete Zoom interviews and additional essays.
