The Centre for Human Rights is now accepting applications for the University of Pretoria LLM Scholarship in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) 2026. The programme is hosted by the University of Pretoria and is one of the most prestigious human rights master’s programmes in Africa.

This fully funded programme brings together outstanding students from across the continent for an intensive one-year academic experience focused on human rights, democracy, and social justice in Africa. Selected participants will study in South Africa and at one of the partner universities across Africa.

The programme is designed for individuals who want to build careers in human rights advocacy, public policy, international organizations, academia, and civil society.

About the HRDA Programme

The Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) programme is an intensive postgraduate programme coordinated by the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. Every year, approximately 25 to 30 students are selected from different African countries.

Students spend the first six months in Pretoria, South Africa, where they attend lectures and practical training sessions led by leading human rights experts. The second semester is completed at one of the programme’s partner universities in Africa.

The programme combines academic coursework, field experience, and research to prepare graduates for leadership roles in the human rights sector.

Scholarship Benefits

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a citizen of an African country
  • Must possess a degree that allows admission into a master’s programme
  • Applicants with an LLB degree or equivalent are encouraged to apply
  • Candidates from humanities and social science backgrounds may also be considered for the MPhil stream
  • Must demonstrate strong academic performance
  • Must have good English language proficiency

Applicants whose previous education was not conducted in English may be required to submit TOEFL results.

The programme runs from January to December and includes:
