Who Can Apply?

You are eligible if you:

  • Hold a PhD awarded on or after 2 April 2020,
    OR will complete your PhD by July 2026
  • Are not Japanese (no Japanese nationality or permanent residency)
  • Are a citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
  • Have strong research or professional experience
  • Have never received a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship before

Japanese nationals, permanent residents, and previous JSPS fellows are not eligible.

Important Requirement: Host Researcher

Before applying, candidates must secure a host researcher at a Japanese university or research institution.

UNU-IAS researchers cannot act as hosts, and UNU will not arrange hosts for applicants.

  3. Prepare a strong research proposal
  4. Complete the online application (English only)
  5. Submit before 31 January 2026 (23:59 JST)

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an online interview.
