The UM NL Social Justice Scholarship 2027 in the Netherlands is offering one full scholarship to an international student admitted to the Master’s programme in Globalisation and Law at Maastricht University. The scholarship is intended for students from outside the European Union and European Economic Area who have a proven record of supporting human rights and/or the rule of law.

The Maastricht University Social Justice Scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses, health and liability insurance, visa costs, pre-academic training and other study-related support. The scholarship is available for the 2027-2028 academic year and the application period opens on 1 October 2026.

The Globalisation and Law programme is a one-year, full-time Master of Laws programme. Students can study areas including human rights, corporate and commercial law, and international trade and investment law.

UM NL Social Justice Scholarship Benefits

The scholarship provides financial support for the full scholarship period of 13 months.

  • Living expenses: €20,150 for 13 months, currently calculated at €1,550 per month
  • Health and liability insurance: €700
  • Tuition fees: Covered at cost
  • Visa application costs: Covered at cost
  • Pre-Academic Training: Covered at cost
  • International Student Ambassador Programme: Covered at cost for the first block
  • Accommodation: A room is allocated to the scholarship recipient until July 2028

The living allowance includes estimated costs for housing, groceries, personal hygiene, telephone, travel, books and study materials, clothing, hobbies and other expenses. Scholarship amounts are subject to change for the 2027-2028 academic year.

Air tickets are not included. A cleaning fee of approximately €75 is also paid separately to Maastricht Housing.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the UM NL Social Justice Scholarship must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a national of a country outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland and Suriname.
  • Not hold dual nationality from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland.
  • Apply for the full-time Master’s programme in Globalisation and Law for 2027-2028.
  • Complete the master’s application and meet all admission requirements by 10 December 2026.
  • Have a proven contribution to human rights and/or the rule of law through extracurricular or academic initiatives and projects.
  • Meet the admission requirements of the selected Maastricht University master’s programme.
  • Be no older than 35 on 1 September 2027.
  • Have a GPA of at least 7.5 out of 10, or the equivalent in another grading system.
  • Preferably not already hold a Master’s degree.

Only one scholarship application can be submitted, and applicants cannot replace documents after submission.

Documents Required

Applicants need to prepare the following documents:

  1. Curriculum vitae of no more than two A4 pages
  2. Scholarship motivation letter using the Maastricht University template
  3. University transcript or official GPA document
  4. Document explaining the university grading system
  5. Personal statement explaining financial need
  6. Reference letter from a professor, lecturer or employer
  7. Contact details of one referee

The reference letter must follow Maastricht University’s guidelines, be dated no earlier than February 2026 and use the referee’s institutional email address.

  1. Final results will be announced by early May 2027.
  2. Apply for the Globalisation and Law Master’s programme through Studielink by 10 December 2026.
  3. Receive your Maastricht University student number.
  4. Log in to your UM account and complete the UM NL Social Justice Scholarship application form.
  5. Upload the required documents.
  6. Submit the scholarship application by 1 February 2027.
  7. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview.
