Applications are now open for the A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship 2027-28 at the University of Exeter in the UK. The fully funded scholarship is designed for experienced English language teachers and related professionals from eligible low- and middle-income countries. Selected scholars will study the MEd Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the University of Exeter.
The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust works to strengthen English language teaching and build capacity in low- and middle-income countries. Through its partnership with the University of Exeter, the Trust provides scholarships for professionals who have academic ability, professional experience and the potential to contribute to English language teaching and learning in their home countries.
The Hornby Scholarship at the University of Exeter is available only for the MEd TESOL programme. It does not cover the PGCert or PGDip TESOL pathways. The scholarship provides full funding for tuition, living costs and other associated expenses during the MEd TESOL programme. Scholars also have the opportunity to connect with a wider network of English language teaching professionals.

What is the A.S. Hornby Scholarship?

Who Can Apply for the Hornby Scholarship 2027-28?
The scholarship is open to applicants who meet the University of Exeter’s admission requirements for the MEd TESOL and the Hornby Scholarship criteria.
Applicants must be:
- Nationals of an eligible country under the OECD DAC classification
- Currently working in an eligible country
- Experienced in English language teaching or a related professional field
- Academically qualified for the MEd TESOL programme
The eligible country categories are Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income and Upper Middle Income countries according to the OECD DAC list.
The scholarship is specifically intended for professionals who can demonstrate both academic excellence and professional experience in English language teaching or related fields.
Hornby Scholarship Academic Requirements
- Applicants must already hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification.
- The degree must have grades equivalent to at least a UK upper second-class honours degree.
- Applicants must have at least three years of full-time experience teaching English or relevant professional experience.
- Teaching experience can be spread over a longer period if the applicant has worked part-time or had periods of unemployment.
- Applicants who already hold a master’s degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English, or a related field from a UK university are not eligible.
- Applicants who already hold a doctoral degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, English, or a related field are not eligible.
Hornby Scholarship Application Process
Applicants should apply for the Hornby Scholarship first rather than applying separately to the MEd TESOL programme at the beginning of the process.
The application guidance explains that shortlisted candidates will later be invited to apply for the MEd TESOL programme. Applicants who progress to the next stage will receive instructions about the programme application.
The application contains 31 questions. Eligible applicants are expected to answer all questions except question 5, where it is not applicable. The form also prevents applicants who do not meet certain eligibility requirements from progressing through the application.
How to Apply for Hornby Scholarship 2027-28
Interested applicants should first check the OECD DAC list to confirm that their country falls within one of the eligible income categories. They should then review the MEd TESOL admission requirements and the Hornby Scholarship applicant guidance.
Applicants should prepare their employment history, academic qualifications and supporting statements before completing the online application. The official guidance recommends preparing supporting statements in a separate document before copying them into the online application form.
There is currently no separate requirement to submit an MEd TESOL application before applying for the Hornby Scholarship. Shortlisted candidates will receive instructions to apply for the master’s programme.
