Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Canon Collins RMTF Scholarships 2027, applicants must:
- Be a citizen or recognized refugee of:
- Angola
- Botswana
- Eswatini
- Lesotho
- Malawi
- Mozambique
- Namibia
- South Africa
- Zambia
- Zimbabwe
- Be ordinarily resident in one of the eligible countries.
- Apply for or already be studying a Master’s or PhD degree at a South African university.
- Hold or expect to obtain:
- A good Honours degree (minimum Second Class Upper or equivalent) for Master’s applicants.
- A good Master’s degree for PhD applicants.
- Demonstrate at least two years of active involvement in social justice activities, including community development, education, advocacy, research, public service, NGO work, leadership, or human rights initiatives.
- Pursue research or studies that address social justice challenges affecting Southern Africa.
- PhD applicants must have identified a supervisor who agrees in principle to supervise their research.

Required Documents
Stage 1
Applicants must upload:
- Degree certificates
- Academic transcripts
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Passport, birth certificate, or driver’s licence
- Proof of refugee status (if applicable)
- Two recent payslips (if employed)
Stage 2 (Shortlisted Applicants)
Selected applicants will be asked to submit:
- Two reference letters
- PhD research proposal (PhD applicants)
- Sample of academic writing (Master’s applicants)
- Letter of support from the proposed PhD supervisor
Application Process
The application process consists of two stages.
Stage 1
Applicants must complete the online application form and upload all required documents before 14 August 2026. Only complete applications from eligible candidates will proceed to the next stage.
Stage 2
Applicants shortlisted after Stage 1 will receive an invitation by email in September 2026 to complete a detailed application.
Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place in October and November 2026. Final results are expected by mid-December 2026.
Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications well before the deadline because the application portal may experience high traffic during the final days.
AI Policy
The Canon Collins Trust states that applicants must not use generative artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT or similar platforms, to draft or substantially edit any part of their scholarship application. Applications found to contain AI-generated content may be disqualified. Standard spelling and grammar checking tools remain acceptable.
