About the PhD Research Project
The doctoral scholarship is part of the ACHIEVE project titled “Pathways to a Net-Zero Target for Hard-to-Abate Swiss Emissions.” The project includes 29 member institutions and 27 collaboration partners working with policymakers, researchers, industry experts, and civil society organizations to support Switzerland’s net-zero transition.
The Agricultural Economics and Policy Group at ETH Zurich is leading a work package focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Swiss agri-food systems. The PhD researcher will study the economic and behavioral aspects of climate change mitigation in agriculture.
Research activities include:
- Conducting farmer surveys and choice experiments
- Analyzing agricultural and policy datasets
- Studying climate policy instruments
- Investigating farmer decision-making and management behavior
- Working with agricultural stakeholders and policymakers
- Supporting academic research collaborations
The doctoral candidate will also supervise bachelor’s and master’s students and complete 18 ECTS of PhD-level coursework at ETH Zurich.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics or a related field
- Final-year master’s students may also apply
- Have strong analytical and academic writing skills
- Be able to work in interdisciplinary research environments
- Have C1 proficiency in German or French
- Demonstrate interest in agricultural policy, climate change, and sustainability research
The language requirement is important because the selected student will conduct surveys and experiments with Swiss farmers.
