WhatsApp ChannelThe UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026 is an initiative that allows government officials and mid-level professionals to develop their expertise in ocean affairs and international maritime law. A program of the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, it aims mainly to assist those from developing countries who work in related areas such as marine science, policy, or law. Fellows are engaged in a targeted research project during their time in the program.
According to a pact established by the United Nations in 1945, peace and security in the global community are ensured alongside good relationships between countries. The fellows spend their first three months training and doing research at the UN Headquarters in New York. The next six months are spent by the fellows at an approved host institution, where they get to learn in greater detail. The total time of the fellowship is nine months.
Institutions that are scattered across the world create twenty-two partnerships that are the backbone of this program. The fellow selects the host to which they want to be assigned. The fellowship covers all costs and gives clear directions to the fellows about their tasks, such as developing a 100-page thesis, presenting their research, and developing an ocean governance plan. Every project presented should reflect the implementation of the commitment to this cause through the adoption of better laws and policies for oceans and seas.
Apart from the hours spent in training and research, the fellowship provides a monthly stipend, medical insurance, and other financial support that allows fellows to be totally engaged in their work.
