What is NIG-INTERN?
The NIG-INTERN Program is a research internship designed for students interested in genetics and life sciences. Interns get hands-on experience conducting independent research under the mentorship of top researchers at NIG.
During the program, participants will:
- Conduct independent research under a host investigator
- Receive training in scientific research and communication
- Participate in lab visits and discussions with principal investigators
- Present their research at the NIG-INTERN Reports Symposium
- Receive a certificate upon successful completion
Additionally, interns can attend graduate lectures, journal clubs, and seminars by prominent researchers, gaining exposure to a wide variety of scientific ideas.

Who Can Apply?
The program is highly competitive, with only a few students selected each year. To be eligible:
- You must be in your prefinal year at the time of application
- 3rd year of a 4-year bachelor’s program
- 2nd year of a 3-year bachelor’s program
- 4th year of a 5-year program
- 1st year of a 2-year master’s program
- 5th year of a 6-year program
- Applicants interested in pursuing a PhD at NIG are encouraged to apply
Important: Non-prefinal students or current PhD students are not eligible.

Financial Support
Unlike previous years, NIG-INTERN 2026 is partially funded:
Costs covered by NIG:
- Round-trip airfare up to 200,000 JPY
- Travel insurance
Costs covered by participants:
- Any airfare exceeding 200,000 JPY
- Domestic travel expenses in Japan
- Accommodation at NIG Guest House (~70,000 JPY for 39 nights)
- Living and miscellaneous expenses
Internship Period
- Dates: June 8 – July 17, 2026
- Requests for shorter or longer durations will not be considered
