DESY Summer Student Programme 2026: A Fully Funded Research Experience in Germany

Share this opportunity

Every summer, DESY – one of Europe’s premier research centres – opens its doors to undergraduates in physics, engineering, and scientific computing. The 2026 Summer Student Programme (21 July-10 September) offers a rare opportunity to join real research teams at DESY’s Hamburg or Zeuthen campuses. You’ll get immersive, hands‑on experience – from working on detectors and accelerator hardware, to coding, data‑analysis or theoretical work.

This isn’t just a short internship. Over 7.5 weeks you’ll:

  • collaborate with leading scientists;
  • participate in lectures (in English) about photon science, accelerators, particle/astroparticle physics;
  • visit accelerators, experiments and central computing facilities;
  • and develop your own mini‑research project in your chosen field.

For students aspiring to a research career – this could be a stepping‑stone to something big.

Who Can Apply

  • Students who by summer 2026 have completed at least three years of university-level studies in physics or related fields (engineering, computing, natural sciences).
  • Those who are about to finish their BSc or are enrolled in a Master’s – but not those who will have completed a Master’s by summer 2026.
  • Students must remain enrolled at their home university throughout the 21 July–10 September period (this is required by German employment law).
  • Applicants should not have participated in DESY’s Summer Student Programme before.

Additionally:

  • You need a good working knowledge of English.
  • Basic computing skills help – many projects involve software, data analysis or scientific computing.
  • Students from non‑EU / non‑EEA countries (like Pakistan) require a work permit for Germany – this is mandatory for participation.

What You Get: Benefits & Experience

  • Free accommodation in a DESY dorm/hostel for the full duration.
  • Stipend: € 28.50 per day, plus partial reimbursement of travel costs.
  • Real‑world research experience in cutting‑edge physics.
  • A certificate upon completion – equivalent to 10 ECTS – which can strengthen your academic CV if you plan for further studies.
  • Networking opportunities: working with international scientists, exposure to large-scale research infrastructure, and possibly future research or grad‑school invitations.

Application Process & Key Requirements

  1. Application window: early December 2025 – 31 January 2026.
  2. You must upload a single PDF containing:
    • A tabular CV (with education, experience, skills);
    • University grades / transcripts or credit‑point certificate.
  3. For non‑EU / non‑EEA applicants: upload an international passport scan and a signed “Certificate of Enrollment” from your university (valid during the entire programme).
  4. Provide referee details (name + email) – referee will get a link to upload a reference letter.
  5. Choose up to three research-area priorities during application (photon science, accelerators, particle physics, etc.).
  6. If selected, you must commit to full attendance – from 21 July to 10 September 2026.

The selection results are typically announced by end of March 2026. Some supervisors may contact candidates in February / March before final decisions.

What Makes DESY’s Programme Stand Out

  • Broad range of research areas: from photon‑science to astroparticle physics – giving flexibility depending on your interest.
  • Hands‑on, meaningful work: not just shadowing – you may be doing real data analysis, software development, or working with hardware.
  • International environment: DESY draws talented students and scientists worldwide – great for building a global network.
  • Recognized credentials: 10 ECTS credit and a DESY‑issued certificate – valuable for future graduate school or academic applications.
  • Support for international students: hostel accommodation + stipend + partial travel reimbursement help reduce financial and logistic barriers.

Tips for Applicants – Especially from Outside Europe

Since you’re applying from a non‑EU country (e.g. Pakistan), here are some extra pointers:

  • Double‑check that your “Certificate of Enrollment” covers exactly the full programme period (21 July – 10 September).
  • Start early: getting a German work permit can take time. Have your international passport and any visa‑related documents ready.
  • Write a clear, concise CV and highlight any computing, programming or lab skills – these matter for selection.
  • Choose your top three preferred research areas carefully; they reflect both your interest and the kind of projects you’d like.
  • Try to secure a strong reference letter – from a professor or supervisor who knows your academic or research potential.

For an ambitious physics or engineering student, the DESY Summer Student Programme isn’t just another summer internship. It’s a chance to step into a major research lab, contribute to real science, and build a profile that stands out – whether you aim for a Master’s, PhD, or a research‑oriented career.

If you’re ready to commit, DESY might just be the opportunity that shapes your future in science.
